PSHE

At City of Birmingham School, the aim of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is for all pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for keeping them healthy and safe, and preparing for life and work in today’s society.

We believe that PSHE plays a vital part in primary education and as well as being delivered through discrete focused lessons, it is also embedded in other areas of the curriculum. The skills and knowledge gained through PSHE have a significant impact on pupils' academic achievement, employability and future life chances.

PSHE also forms an important part of school discussion, where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured. Pupils have opportunities to learn across three core themes; Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. Children learn about Relationships and Sex and Health Education (RSHE) to ensure that they are able to manage the physical and emotional changes at puberty; have an understanding of healthy relationships and an awareness of how to maintain physical and mental health.

Our curriculum is flexible in order to reflect the varying needs of pupil’s development and readiness, whilst taking into account prior learning, experience and understanding. This is achieved through a spiral curriculum to develop knowledge, skills and attributes, where prior learning is revisited, reinforced and extended year on year.

PSHE is integral to the development of children’s values, helping them to become a positive citizen in a forever changing community.
