The Behaviour Support Team is the traded arm of the City of Birmingham School. We deliver tailored programmes of support to both mainstream and special primary and secondary schools to promote positive behaviour management strategies, support emotional wellbeing and champion inclusive practice. We currently work in over 100 schools across the city.
“This is an outstanding service. The staff are exceptional, the advice given is invaluable and they never fail to support the school, children and parents alike”
SENDCo / AHT, Yenton Primary School
All members of the Behaviour Support Team are experienced behaviour support teachers with a track record of re-engaging permanently excluded and at risk learners. We are able to offer advice and support at all levels, from school systems and policy review to direct intervention work with young people themselves. We support the assessment of pupils for Education, Health and Care Plans, carry out whole school behaviour reviews and offer training around all aspects of complex and challenging behaviour.
“The ongoing support that we have received from the COBS team has been first class. It is joined up, thought provoking, informative and most importantly provides excellent support to our young people. We will definitely be using this service again in the future”

We offer a range of support packages to best meet the needs of individual schools. Further details of our packages can be found in our Behaviour Support Team brochure 23/24. Most schools choose to buy their own package of support but groups of schools may join together and purchase collectively, sharing their hours as required. Some schools opt to commission bespoke pieces of work around areas of specific need.
"We are a good school, with excellent SEND provision according to Ofsted, largely due to the training, support and ongoing development provided by the Behaviour Support Team. They have led the adults to change; which in turn has led the pupils to a more positive and happier approach to behaviour across the school"
SENCO / Assistant Head Teacher, Beeches Junior School
The Behaviour Support Team deliver a programme of practical, high quality, behaviour focussed training events throughout the year. These events are open to all schools at prices that won’t break the budget. Schools that subscribe to a package of In School Support benefit from a reduced rate for each of our events. The team also deliver a range of half day and twilight training sessions to boost your school’s CPD offer. Further details and examples of popular CPD events can be found in our Behaviour Support Team Brochure 23/24
“I would definitely recommend this training to other colleagues who would benefit from the in-depth knowledge and delivery style that our COBS worker provided.”
Headteacher, Sladefield School
Our experienced Team Teach instructors are licensed to deliver Level 1 (6 hr) and Level 2 (12 hr) courses to all Birmingham schools. These courses offer bespoke de-escalation and positive handling training with an emphasis on promoting and protecting positive relationships. We explore the legal framework, the nature of conflict and a range of verbal and non-verbal de-escalation strategies alongside effective positive handling techniques and the subsequent recording, reporting and reviewing processes. The Behaviour Support Team is proud to hold an Area Operating License for Team Teach delivery throughout Birmingham. This means we can train staff in all settings, both educational and non educational. For further information and prices please contact Ben Dunlop, [email protected]
“The trainers were excellent, delivering the theoretical and practical elements of the course in a calm and positive manner at all times. Support was provided where necessary so that all staff were left feeling secure in the techniques demonstrated”
Headteacher, Moseley Church of England Primary School
The Behaviour Support Team also act as gatekeepers for the primary “Social Skills” courses that run throughout the year. These courses are designed as an earlier intervention strategy to support pupils in addressing their own behaviour and prevent the risk of subsequent exclusion from school. Course tutors maintain ongoing dialogue with school staff and share recommended strategies for success back in the mainstream classroom. Courses are open to all schools, costings and further details are available on request.
“The pupils and families who have been supported by the Social Skills Programme have found the approaches and calm environment very beneficial”
Sundridge Primary School
